In another sign of how the internet continues to evolve, YouTube introduced a brand new app specifically geared toward kids on February 23rd. The app is called YouTube Kids, and it is available on smartphones and tablets.
Google had hinted toward the creation of some sort of child-friendly service this past fall. At the time, USA Today reported that Google was going to have child-friendly versions of some of its services to make the internet a safer place to use for children. However, no specifics were clear until the recent announcement of this all-new app.
All of the content on YouTube Kids is geared toward children under the age of 13. The app is completely free, and it will have what Google claims to be a “kid-friendly” design, featuring large icons and minimal need to scroll through menus and pages.
This app will be completely separate from the regular YouTube mobile app. Parents will have the ability to control what their children watch as well as how much time they are able to spend watching videos through the app.
This is one of the first big online networks to offer specialized services for young children. Other internet giants like Facebook, Twitter and Google do not allow their services to be used by children who are under 13 years old. Considering the tremendous size of YouTube’s user base, this could have a big influence on the way that other online brands choose to gear their services toward children.
It also raises questions for digital marketers. Will the YouTube Kids app have the same advertising abilities as the regular YouTube app and the YouTube website? If so, you can expect to see toy companies, kid’s movies and shows and snack brands to jump at the chance to bring their in-app video advertisements to the new Kids portal.
If you have young kids, be sure to check out the YouTube Kids app and let us know what you think!
