A new report from Adobe Systems indicates that as the amount of people viewing digital video from mobile devices increases, so will the amount of spending on digital advertising.
By the fourth quarter of 2016, it’s expected that mobile video viewing will surpass the amount of people viewing digital videos on desktop computers. This is due in large part to the huge increase in numbers of people that own and regularly use smartphones and tablets.
What’s really interesting about this shift is that most of the time when people are viewing videos from mobile devices, they’re doing so at home and not on the go. This is partially because people are more likely to have Wi-Fi connectivity when they’re at home. However, public Wi-Fi hotspots are also on the rise thanks to expanded networks by major providers like Comcast and Cablevision. As of the end of 2014, Comcast claims it had more than 8 million Wi-Fi hotspots across the United States.
More information shows that the iPad has become the most popular device for streaming TV Everywhere content. Adobe predicts that by the end of the year, 17.5 percent of all cable television customers will be signed up for and access TV Everywhere, which is nearly triple the amount of people it would have been at just two years earlier.
So does this mean that desktop computers and traditional television are going out the window? It’s hard to say for certain, but what is clear is that any company engaging in digital video marketing needs to take a closer look at how it incorporates mobile into its strategy. There are certain elements of mobile video marketing that differ from traditional digital video marketing, so companies need to make sure that they’re doing everything they can to set themselves up for success in their campaigns.
