Three Key Tips For Facebook Video Ads
Dec 2013 30

Over the past couple months, Facebook has gradually introduced to its users a brand new video feature that automatically plays any videos that show up in a user’s newsfeed. As a person scrolls down, he or she will see the video begin to play silently, which is meant to draw user’s attention to the video. Facebook designed the new feature in this way is to be less intrusive to the user experience.

According to Facebook, they’ve succeeded in creating more activity through these changes; they have seen a more than 10% increase in engagement (likes, comments, shares) on videos since they first began testing the feature. In fact, Facebook is so confident in the effectiveness of video marketing that they are now offering the opportunity to broadcast a 15-second video advertisement to all 140 million of its users for a cool $2 million per day.

Clearly, this is just the beginning for video ads on Facebook. But how can smaller businesses get the most out of new video ad format on Facebook? Here are a few tips:

  • Create ads specifically for Facebook. Because of the unique nature of the new video advertisement system on Facebook, you should not simply bring over ads you’ve already used on YouTube, television or other channels. You need to consider all aspects of the changes that have been made to Facebook’s video system and create custom ads that take those changes into account.

  • Create ads that are visually appealing. Because advertisements will be automatically muted unless users choose otherwise, you must be able to capture the viewer’s attention visually. You have a very short amount of time to draw your viewer’s interest before he or she simply chooses to scroll on, so take advantage of the time that you have.

  • Create ads that still make sense in silence. Additionally, any video advertisement you choose to display on Facebook should make sense without sound. Therefore, you should avoid dialogue-heavy ads, instead opt for ads that contain flashes of text, or easy-to-follow action that doesn’t require narration.

Once your advertisement finishes playing, viewers will have the opportunity to click on other videos by you. So if you can pull viewers in with one advertisement, you give them an instant opportunity to further engage with your brand.
